The Louisville Orchestra moved another step closer to long-term stability with the appointment of Andrew Kipe as its new Executive Director. After a months-long search, the announcement was made on October 11.
Kipe leaves his role as the General Manager of the Phoenix Symphony, where he was responsible for all aspects of operations, education and artistic planning since 2011. During his tenure with Phoenix Symphony, he was a part of a successful restructuring that reduced the orchestra’s deficit (FY '13 ended with a budget surplus), rebranded the organization, and rebuilt relationships with the musicians into a positive and productive partnership. Prior to that, he was the Executive Director for the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and the General Manager of the Portland Symphony Orchestra.
Kipe said, "I am honored that I have been named the next Executive Director of the Louisville Orchestra. Throughout the interview process I was very impressed by the commitment of the musicians, board and staff to the success of the Orchestra and its strong future.” He continues, “I am looking forward to getting to know the Louisville community and working with this great group of people."
Jim Welch, Louisville Orchestra board president, says, “The musicians, staff and board of the Louisville Orchestra have been tirelessly working to find the right candidate for the CEO position. We have an opportunity to reposition the organization through this role, and we all feel that Andrew Kipe has a thorough understanding of the challenges facing symphony orchestras today and the creative vision to address these challenges effectively.” Welch continues, “We were extremely fortunate that David Hyslop was able to step in as Interim CEO (in January 2013) until the role was filled permanently. With his leadership, the Louisville Orchestra has gained traction and is on an upward trajectory. Andrew and I have asked Hyslop to stay on in an advisory capacity as needed to ensure a smooth transition.”
Mr. Kipe will begin his tenure on November 11 and will provide leadership and vision to ensure the Louisville Orchestra fulfills its mission, realizes its vision, and achieves its institutional goals for artistic excellence, financial stability and service to the community. He will work closely with the music director and the musicians on the artistic vision along with the staff and the board on fundraising, redeveloping brand awareness and building customer loyalty.
